Hearing voices is a serious business, but Chris Johnston portrayed the lead character, Warren, in Hadley’s Experiment with an informed funniness that was both empathic and engaging. The play took the audience on a multi-media journey through Warren’s experience of psychosis, and were left with no doubt that hearing voices is challenging in every way, breaking up his home life, losing him his job and generally turning his view of the world into a bizarre place where dealing with the many vocal directives left him isolated and frightened.
The enthusiastic audience filled Hailsham Pavilion, and was treated to an evening of great theatre with a lively debate afterwards. Organised by Focus on Mental Health, Sussex Partnership Foundation Trust and the Sussex Hearing Voices Network the performance was funded through 'Awards For All' lottery funding. The aim of the evening was to highlight that approximately 10 percent of the population have heard a voice, or voices, and yet there is still a general lack of understanding about the experience.
